We’d like to introduce to Sanjana Varma, a member of our 2021 NextGen Leaders cohort.

Hailing from Hyderabad in India, Sanjana is based in Melbourne and works full-time as a receptionist at DHL Express.

She joined the programme to extend her learning and hear from experts in the field of advertising, her passion.

Originally specialising in journalism at university, Sanjana switched to advertising after falling in love with the power of content and its ability to build a community that influences and inspires. The spark of this love affair – an offhand comment from her literature professor on the influence advertising has had on shaping culture and communities throughout human history.

Impressively, Sanjana has joined a number of the live Table Talk sessions while working in her role at DHL Express in Melbourne. Not letting the demands of her full-time job interfere with her participation in the programme.

How are you finding the programme so far?

It has been everything I hoped for. I am getting an opportunity to pick on the minds of industry leaders, get an insight into their day-to-day lives and last but not the least get inspired by them.

What has surprised you about the programme or WPP most, if anything?

I keep forgetting that everyone has had a starting point to their journey and every leader has gone through a similar phase. I realised that I could draw in strength from these leaders to go for what I believe in. 

What are your career aspirations?

I want to be in Advertising – specifically Programmatic Advertising, where I hope to get an opportunity to research and mine for insights from data. I think it is a perfect blend of art and science and when done correctly can open up a world of possibilities. It is exciting to see how programmatic advertising will evolve with the challenges presented to it. 

Is there any WPP brand or leader you’d love to work with in the future? Why?

One day hopefully with Kirk McDonald, Chief Executive Officer at GroupM (North America). He is passionate about shaping advertising and wants to build brand communication that not only works but resonates better with people.
